While you can’t buy a health insurance policy just for infertility treatment, you can buy infertility insurance that protects you from the financial risks of complications from a procedure. For example, in Leann’s case, such insurance would have provided short-term disability and medical costs for any complications resulting from infertility treatments. It can also provide long-term disability protection should you be unable to work and suffer a loss of income following complications from a procedure. In a worst-case scenario, you can also buy life insurance in case an infertility procedure kills you, but you should have life insurance anyway.

Fertility insurance is usually mandatory for collaborative cycles like egg donation. It protects the donors from unforeseen and costly medical complications from donating. Surrogates are always provided with such insurance, and it is the responsibility of the recipient to provide.

Maternity Coverage

Once you get pregnant, your maternity insurance kicks in. Check your coverage now because once you get pregnant, it’s considered a preexisting condition, so you usually cannot add on coverage for pregnancy and delivery. This is a huge expense you don’t want to pay out of pocket. And if your baby is born with a problem or there are complications during childbirth, a hospital bill can be devastating.

Disability Insurance

“I signed up for disability insurance the week before I started my first IVF. It was really cheap, and I started to panic about potential dangers. When I became pregnant with the triplets, I delivered early and I got paid $100 for each day I was in the hospital and so did each of my babies. They were in NICU for two months! I know in some states they exclude you if you have ever gone through infertility treatments or if the pregnancy resulted from infertility treatments, but it was the best spur-of-the-moment decision I ever made!”
